Copyright and Music Education

With the development of easier and cheaper ways to copy material, whether printed or recorded, there is the increased danger of breaking one or more of the complex copyright laws. Knowing what is acceptable within an educational environment can sometimes require an advanced degree in copyright and trademark law.

The bottom line is, in most cases, it is not legal to copy printed music. It deprives the composeres and arrangers, who created the work, and the publishers, who incur the costs involved in licensing, printing and distributing the piece, of their well deserved income.

Listed below are a number of resources that attempt to clarify these laws and put them into perspective for music educators.

The Audio Library is Available!

Sometimes our ambitions get the best of us and we over commit as to what can be accomplished in a specific timeframe. That’s exactly what I did in reference to two initiatives I set, the Audio Lending Library and the Music Library Blog

The good news is that you are reading this on the new blog and the audio lending library is now available. The library contains over 100 different CD titles and over 1,600 tracks of music that you can use as examples for your ensembles or to review in consideration of new performance pieces.

Borrowing is simple. Review the library's holdings on our website and send us the number and title of the recording you wish to borrow. The loan period for the audio library is three weeks

To get to the library, go to the same page where we list all of the print music in our holdings (http://www.monroe.edu/techServices.cfm?subpage=257). At the bottom of the page are the two files listing the CDs.

The two files (by CD and by Track) allow you to view the library either by individual CD with all of the tracks listed (click to enlarge):

Or by individual track with the CD where it can be found (click to enlarge):

In both cases, we are providing the following information for each track (if available):
  • Title
  • Composer
  • Arranger
  • Performing Artist(s)
  • Catalog Number of the CD
  • Track Number on the CD
  • Type of Ensemble
  • Grade/Level of the Piece
  • Library Catalog Number for the Music (If We Own It)
We are also noting when a track is only an excerpt vs. a full performance. While this hasn't been an issue in the past, many of the discs now being provided by the music publishers only contain a minute or two of each title.

Welcome to the New Music Library Blog

Welcome to the new blog for the Monroe #1 BOCES Music Library. Our hope is that this will be not only a way to get the latest information on the library out to you, its users, but also a place that can be used for discussions on a variety of topics and a new venue for you to get information out to the music educator's community.

The Music Library newsletter has worked well for the last couple of years in telling you about new library offerings and policies; however, at only two or three issues per year, much of the information was months old before finding its way into your hands. This blog will be updated on a regular basis with information on updates to the library catalog, changes in the way we work with you and, like the audio library, notifications of new services.

It is also for YOU. Have a question on some aspect of a specific piece? Let us know and we will post the question here, opening up the comments for replies. Are you particularly proud of a performance by one of your ensembles or have news of an award received by your district or one of your students? Send us a note so that we can tell all the readers. We even have the ability to easily post pictures. Find an article that would be of interest to everyone? Send us a link and we'll point them in the right direction.

Contacting us is easy. Just send an e-mail to roger_wink@boces.monroe.edu.

We hope that this new Music Library service will be helpful in your daily educational and informational needs. Please feel free to contact us with suggestions and comments.
